Space Technology to Fast-track Prime Minister Modi’s Energy Access Goals in India

In collaboration with IESA, the European Space Agency is now launching a new initiative to support feasibility studies that will identify and explore business opportunities for deploying services based on earth observation data, satellite communications, and other space assets to support the decentralized management of microgrids in India and other developing nations. The study is expected to lead up to a funded microgrid pilot project.

Remote Communities Stop Burning Their Midnight Oil with Large-scale Energy Storage

A growing number of communities are now turning to solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind turbines. And in many cases, they are adopting microgrid solutions in which the diesel generation and renewable plant complement each other. The aim is always to ensure the reliability and autonomy of the electricity supply and to optimize operating costs. This is where a large-scale lithium-ion (Li-ion) energy storage system (ESS) can play a vital role in mitigating the variable and unpredictable nature of wind and solar plants. The ESS can perform a number of roles, including control of ramp rates, power smoothing, power shaping, peak shaving and frequency regulation.

Solar Now Cheapest Source of Energy

A recent report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance shows that solar energy prices in China, India, Brazil and 55 other emerging market economies have dropped to about one-third of 2010 prices. Gerry Arances, of the Philippines’ Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development, says that “solar energy that is gathered and distributed through community-managed mini-grids can also solve the problem of energy’s costliness and riskiness in the countryside.”
