Microgrid News Highlights October 5, 2016
Like other major blackouts, such as the week-long shutdown in NSW last year, and the hour-long outage that affected more than 130,000 customers in West Australia last month, the event in South Australia last Wednesday is likely to lead to more households and businesses looking at battery storage as a back-up to the grid, or even to go off grid altogether.
The Big Apple is thinking big on energy storage ”“ 100 megawatt hours by 2020 ”“ and Mayor Bill de Blasio has also expanded solar power targets. Late last week, Mayor de Blasio announced an expansion of targets to 1,000 MW of citywide solar capacity by 2030. That level of capacity could meet the power needs of more than 250,000 households.
Teaming up with Advanced Microgrid Solutions, Irvine Ranch Water District will be using an energy storage system to reduce its costs and help ease demand on the grid during peak hours. The project is the largest of its kind at a public water agency in the U.S.
